The Most Effective Way I found to advertise your website is to post off line adds as well as on line ads.

Off line advertising is a great place to set and forget it. By that I mean just do it once and don't worry about it. A perfect offline ad is forever there. People see it numerous times before they call. The big trick is getting it located in the same spot over and over again.

My favorite example was for a website I had up call Ibuyhomes.com. I was placing a credit card size ad in one of the local papers that came out only twice a week. It was freely  distributed and it had a lot of readers. Sure enough, after 3 or 4 issues of the paper running the ad, the leads were being generating. I would get 4 to 5 calls every time that paper ran. Plus it was left on every driveway in the city. Needles to say I was generating 15 leads a week just from that advertising in the local paper.

Next I went one step further. I advertised as a sponsor on their on line newspaper. So Now I had a banner running 24/7 getting an additional 4 to 5 leads a week. 

I wrote the ad once.

 Paid for a years worth of advertising  for both. 

Set it and forget it.

Bottom Line. I understand not everyone has the budget to spend 3 to 5k a year in advertising.

But there are lots of cheap and free local places you can find to place your ad or link.

But Be sure to use a combination of techniques to get the word out. Depending on one line is suicide. Its a huge risk for the beginner. Start off with some home made adds with tear off's and placing them in the local grocery store. Go to Free classified ads and post there. Also some community papers allow you to post free classified ads in print and on line. Excellent way to promote your site.
